A group of followers loyal to the defeated enemy, Malakai, has gone into hiding, plotting revenge against Meira and the Three Kingdoms. Known as the Shadow Remnants, they slowly infiltrate positions of power within the kingdoms, undermining Meira's efforts and sowing discord among the people. An assassination attempt on Meira's life raises concerns about the growing threat.
Meira and Lyra begin to study the Dreamweaver's Mirror, hoping to use its power to gather intelligence on the Shadow Remnants.
