On a perfect June morning, Clarissa Dalloway - fashionable, worldly, wealthy, an accomplished hostess - sets off to buy flowers for the party she will host that evening. Dans "Mrs Dalloway", Virginia Woolf nous fait bien ressentir l'état d'esprit de ses différents personnages sur lesquels le temps et les évènements sont passés : les mariages, l'expérience de la vie dans les colonies ou encore l'expérience de la Guerre (qui a totalement brisé M. Smith). Arrivés à la cinquantaine, toutes ces personnes repensent au passé et à ce qu'ils ont vécu, aux décisions qu'ils ont prises et à leurs conséquences.
