At sixteen Margaret's childhood is over when she is persuaded to leave the secure world of her family's farm to marry a stranger with his own secrets. Alienated by her husband's coldness, Margaret is desperate for affection. And she unwillingly finds herself turning to the wealthy Richard Treveryan; a cynical and bitter man, loathed by her family and friends. Margaret discovers in him an unexpected tenderness and in herself a passion she'd never thought possible.
