Résumé

Prevention end effective treatment of the epilepsies remain as major unmet clinical needs in neurology. Animal models provide a necessary tool to explore novel mechanisms of epileptogenesis, epilepsy, and co-morbidities and assess the efficacy of novel treatments. Experimental Models of Epilepsy by Kiffin Penry and Dominick P Purpura (1972) was the first comprehensive volume on the animal models of epilepsy.
Thirty-three years later, the 1st Edition of the "Animal Models of Seizures and Epilepsy" was published by Pitkänen, Schwartzkroin, Moshe (2006) and it has became a key laboratory manual. During the past 10 years, there has been a rapid expansion in the number of animal models, number of epilepsy syndromes modelled, and recommendations which give guidelines how to best use the animal models. To keep the research community updated of these exciting developments, we have created an updated edition of Animal Models of Seizures and Epilepsy.
The new Editors' team (Pitkänen, Bockmaster, Galanopoulou, Moshe) have invited experts in epilepsy research to provide technical reports of the existing models of seizures and epilepsies, including in vivo, in vitro, computational models, stem cells and cultures, and discuss critically their features and utility for basic epilepsy research, as well as their relevance to the clinical phenomenology and therapy development.
Models of Seizures and Epilepsy, 2e is a valuable practical guide for researchers looking tor the preferred experimental models to address their research interests. It is also an essential reference book for students, fellows, and physicians who seek a primer on advanced research tools. KEY FEATURES : - The most up-to-date comprehensive description of animal models of seizures and epilepsy. - Comprehensive analysis of "What the models model" to guide the selection of each model.
- Elegant examples of the use of novel technologies that can be applied in experimental epilepsy research. - World expert opinions on the clinical relevance of each model.
