Résumé

The Mediterranean - a land of perfect blue skies and warm sunshine, where pine-scented hills meet azure seas. Yet this familiar image is only part of the story. The Mediterranean conceals a secret landscape populated by a dazzling variety of wild flowers and plants, from spectacular orchids and ancient olive trees to delicate snowdrops and spiny cacti. Following on from their previous book, Flora of the Silk Road, Christopher and Basak Gardner present a stunning selection of the finest wild flora that grow in the Mediterranean region, and that which grows in the four other world regions that enjoy a Mediterranean climate.
Travelling across five continents, the authors reveal the rich flora of each region, from the flamboyant and exotic to the beautiful yet familiar, with each plant presented in its natural habitat. Beginning with the countries of the Mediterranean Basin, the reader is taken along the towering Atlas Mountains, through Andalucia, rugged Corsica and Italy, to arrive at the amazing botanical richness of Greece, southern Anatolia and Jordan.
In California and Chile, the journey is through flowering deserts, snow-capped peaks and rich shrub lands to towering forests. The ancient landscapes of south-western Australia provide a remarkable assemblage of unique flora, whilst the relatively tiny Western Cape of South Africa is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. The accompanying text provides descriptions of the species and their distribution, as well as offering guidance to those wishing to photograph plants in the wild.
With 800 stunning colour photographs, Flora of the Mediterranean presents a breadth of flora never before brought together in a single volume, and offers a unique window on the floral wonders of the Mediterranean world.
