Résumé

Fourteen-year-old Sophie has grown up in institutions, so she is well trained to survive life as a Daughter in an ancient boarding school. But nothing can prepare her for meeting, and falling for, Lucas. Wealthy, Jewish and an exotic contrast to the boys she has grown up with, he draws her into a tangle of forbidden pursuits which seem doomed to end in discovery and disgrace. Sophie's other love is knowledge; she succumbs to the glamour of learning and life at the old school.
There are lessons she must learn in the outside world, however, lessons about class, families, mother-love and the havoc they can wreak...
