Très fluide malgré sa construction audacieuse, Stella Maris met en scène Alicia face à un psychiatre tandis qu'elle s'épanche, laissant transparaître ses fêlures derrière son cynisme. Dix ans avant <i>Le passager</i>, la sœur de Bobby évoque ses hallucinations, son passé, son amour interdit dans ce roman uniquement constitué de dialogues sans guillemets, ni tirets ou verbes introducteurs pour repères. J'avais principalement aimé "Le Passager" de McCarthy pour ses séquences de dialogues à l'écriture remarquable. Ça tombe bien Stella Maris est un dialogue de 250 pages entre un thérapeute et la jeune Alice, mathématicienne de génie au cerveau malheureusement touché par la dépression et la schyzophrénie. Le ping pong verbal qui en découle est aussi jouissif que sombre et profondément triste.
Sont évoqués les amours incestueux de la jeune fille, sa passion des maths et les mentors qui la guident, sa famille, mais aussi sa vision extrêmement pessimiste du monde et de l'existence.
Les répliques fusent, l'esprit vif et parfois taquin de la patiente trouve écho auprès du psychiatre et tout cela offre un au lecteur un échange captivant... mais aussi pesant.
Mieux vaut être averti, Stella Maris est une lecture émotionnellement lourde et peu recommandable pour des esprits fragiles ou instables.
