This book is a Weekend Pocketbook on Everything You Should Know About the Mathematics of Coral Reefs, the surprising story of how equations, algorithms, and geometry may help save some of the most threatened ecosystems on Earth. Written in everyday language, we explore why coral reefs are collapsing, and how mathematicians, physicists, ecologists, and engineers are joining the fight. What if the future of coral conservation depends not only on divers and nurseries, but on formulas? We begin with reefs as living underwater cities: home to a quarter of marine species, protectors of coastlines, engines of tourism and fisheries, and fragile structures built millimeter by millimeter by tiny coral polyps.
But these cities are now under siege from marine heatwaves, bleaching, ocean acidification, broken larval pathways, overfishing, and algae takeover. We explore the hidden geometry of coral itself. Branching corals, dome-shaped boulder corals, plate corals, and spiraling colonies are not random shapes; they reflect flow, light, drag, nutrients, and growth rules. We discuss fractals, recursive growth, boundary layers, logistic curves, competition models, and how the shape of a coral can decide whether it survives in a violent current or a calm lagoon.
We follow mathematics into the front lines of reef rescue. We look at degree-heating-weeks (DHW) models that forecast bleaching, optimization tools that guide boats toward crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks, graph theory that keeps reefs connected through larval dispersal, and marine protected areas (MPAs) designed like living networks rather than isolated parks. Finally, we explore the future: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), 3D-printed reef structures, artificial intelligence (AI) digital twins, quantum-accelerated flow models, and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-assisted heat-tolerant corals that could one day save coral reefs
