Résumé

This book is a Weekend Pocketbook on Everything You Should Know About the Future of Medicine, the story of how doctors may soon treat disease not only with pills and surgeries, but with living cells, engineered microbes, added genes, and lab-grown tissues. Written in everyday language, this book explores the next frontier of medicine. We begin with cell-based immunotherapies, where the body's own defenders are trained to fight disease in new ways.
Could these therapies move beyond cancer and help reset the immune system in autoimmune diseases? We enter the hidden city inside us: the microbiome. Trillions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi shape digestion, immunity, inflammation, metabolism, and perhaps even mood. We explore fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), live biotherapeutics, engineered bacterial cocktails, and the question of whether doctors may one day prescribe microbes as precisely as they prescribe antibiotics.
We move into next-generation gene therapies. Instead of only cutting faulty DNA with clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR), what if medicine could simply add the working gene a patient is missing? We discuss adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors, lentiviral delivery, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), hemophilia, inherited blindness, and the difficult promise of one-shot treatments.
We explore regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Can stem cells, scaffolds, bioinks, and three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting rebuild what disease or injury has taken away? We discuss printed ears, engineered blood vessels, insulin-producing islet cells, heart patches, induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), and the distant dream of printing entire organs. This pocketbook is all you need to know to understand the next decade of medicine.
