Résumé

This book is a Weekend Pocketbook on Everything You Should Know About the End of Everything, the story of the ultimate fate of the universe. Written in everyday language, we explore whether the cosmos ends in darkness, violence, collapse, or a sudden rewriting of reality itself. How does a universe that began with the Big Bang finally end?We begin with the scale of the problem: a universe filled with trillions of galaxies, ancient light, dark energy, and a mysterious balance between gravity and expansion.
We explore why the shape of space matters, what cosmologists mean by omega, and how tiny changes in dark energy's pressure could send the universe toward radically different futures. We then turn to the Big Freeze, also called Heat Death. Could the universe simply keep expanding until stars burn out, black holes fade, and the cosmos becomes cold, dark, and almost perfectly still? We explore entropy, the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), the fading of starlight, and the long future imagined by physicists who study the universe's distant ages.
The ending may not be gentle. We also discuss the Big Rip, where phantom energy could stretch space so violently that galaxies, stars, planets, and even atoms might be torn apart. What would it mean for expansion itself to become the destroyer? We also explore the Big Crunch and Big Bounce. Could cosmic expansion slow, stop, and reverse? Could the universe collapse inward, only to rebound into another beginning?By studying how everything might end, can we understand more deeply why anything exists at all?
