In a rather simple context, leadership is a trait or quality attributed to a leader, and a leader is seen as someone whom a group of people follows or somebody who guides and directs his subordinates.
A leader is someone who can do so much as to influence other people, and enlist their aid and support. Since the term, and the idea itself, slightly varies, a handful of those whom we consider as leaders have given their insights regarding leadership. It is a must to realize what leadership is for these people who have become leaders themselves. Lao Tzu had something to say about leadership. This much revered ancient Chinese philosopher and founder of Taoism is a leader himself.
His influences not only on his homeland but also on the entirety of the world have been so vast and powerful that his teachings continue to live on until today. Lao Tzu said, "A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will all say: we did it ourselves." Lao Tzu's thought on leadership is a rather deep one, extending beyond the physical. For Lao Tzu, a leader does his job best when he can make his men accomplish their mission without him actually taking part in the physical endeavors.
A leader is someone who brings out his men's best potential, not someone who does most of the work. One of the greatest military leaders in the world's history, the French general and emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte appears to same almost the same thoughts of leadership with Lao Tzu. "When I give a minister an order, I leave it to him to find the means to carry it out." For him, leadership is not about directing people all the way through getting a job done.
Being a leader involves choosing the right men to do the right job and letting them do it their way.
