Résumé

"Whether describing Columbus sailing to the Americas, Samuel Baker on the Nile, or Scott or Shackleton on the ice, [Fleming] is always entertaining' . Sunday Times. Tales of Endurance offers forty-five gripping accounts of some of the most amazing feats in the history of exploration. Including classic journeys such as that of Marco Polo in the 13th century, to Umberto Nobile's flight by airship to the North Pole in 1928, this fascinating collection travels through the three "ages" of exploration - Reconnaissance, Inquiry and Endeavour. Escaping bears both polar and grizzly, fierce storms and the ravages of scurvy; eating rats, penguins, grubs, even leather; surviving mutiny, disease, and in one case trial by poison; these are stories of extraordinary heroism and, at times, sheer madness. What links these tales, however, is the insatiable curiosity and determination that drives the history of exploration. 'You have to be a tough nut for inclusion in Fergus Fleming's anthology of travel" Guardian
