Résumé

Why do we design "sound", but reduce noise ? What does sound do and how do audiences hear in the theatre ? Is sound design really a branch of scenography ? This unique collection of key writings on sound design explores how sound is used to create meaning and atmosphere in the theatre. Sound draws on a wide-ranging compilation of newly commissioned work as well as rare readings and interviews, held together by a fascinating and provocative narrative.
Covering aspects of the discipline such as changing hearing cultures, semiotics and the phenomenology of theatre sound, this diverse selection of readings takes the reader beyond the basics of sound effects and into the fascinating space and time of theatre aurality. Sound is the ideal resource for students, practitioners and researchers, and anyone else interested in what it is to be a member of the audience - or to be audient - in the theatre.

L'éditeur en parle

Palgrave Readers in Theatre Practice. Series Editor : Simon Shepherd. At the heart of every performance lies a tension, a tension between the material object and the magical transformations of theatre. Taking elements of theatre craft such as sound, puppetry and directing, the series explores this relationship, offering both the vocabulary and historical context for critical discussion and creative practice.
