Longtemps apanage des militaires, l'historiographie de la guerre a connu d'importants bouleversements après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. L'histoire militaire laissa alors la place à une histoire plus englobante, soucieuse d'analyser les liens étroits qui unissent la guerre à la société. Progressivement, ce changement gagna les spécialistes du Proche-Orient médiéval. Cet ouvrage pluridisiplinaire, qui réunit des historiens et des archéologues, offre un bilan des principaux travaux réalisés jusqu'ici, et propose, par l'exemple, des perspectives de recherche.
Il confirme que le fait guerrier joua un rôle moteur dans l'évolution des sociétés du Proche-Orient des Xe-XVe siècles.
