On the run from Ardery's prison of luxury and cruelty, Peg takes refuge with a lonely baker. Mr. Beck appears to be an upright pillar of the community, but behind closed doors, she soon learns of his secret vices. She needs to step carefully in order to navigate through his desires while she keeps her eye on her dreams. And when Kate, the Madame, finds her hiding place, Peg is caught in a web of blackmail that teaches her more than any respectable woman should ever know. She's left with two choices - submit to Kate's lascivious blackmail, or marry the dour and embittered baker.
Either way she will be tied down for the rest of her life and this is not at all what she had planned. Ardery will not save her from these fates, and it's not until she has blood on her hands that she finds out what true freedom means.
