Résumé

Johannes Rantete (MA cum laude, Wits) has been a researcher with the Centre for Policy Studies, a coordinator of the National Housing Forum Land and Services Working Group, a director of Land Administration in the Free State provincial government. He has also been the head of department of two departments in the Limpopo provincial government, director general of North West provincial government, advisor to four national Cabinet Ministers, acting CEO of PSETA, MDDA and SA Tourism and the head of the Government Employees Housing Scheme.
He has contributed a number of articles to newspapers, journal and books. The African National Congress and the Negotiated Settlement in South Africa is a second reprint of a book first published by JL Van Schaik in 1988. The book provides the first comprehensive and incisive analysis of the ANC since its unbanning in 1990. The first section traces the ANC's transition from an exile, underground liberation movement to a legal organisation in South Africa in the early 1990s.
Particular attention is paid to its institutional, policy and political development including its internal tensions, democratic practice, and attempts to address violence. The second section analyses the negotiated trajectory to power - the factors behind the ANC's decision to negotiate and its approach to negotiations. It also studies the conclusion of the negotiated settlement, the election campaign and the installation of the Government of National Unity in 1994.
This book is a valuable resource for a wide range of readership: academics and students, political and military strategists, policy analysts, sociologists, economists, negotiators, constitutional experts, diplomats, investors, government officials, the broader ANC membership and the general public.
