In a time before the Kingdom of Spain, in a land still in shock during the Holy Wars of Reconquest against the Moors. Pockets of Muslims still live in the hills, in fear of their lives. Rogue Christian warriors track them down and kill them for the little they have, or just to kill. Barcelona, 1276 A single mother in a foreign land. Her eight-year-old son witnesses a brutal murder, and she suspects his uncle - an Almogaver warrior - is responsible. Should she simply accept the unseen hand of fate, or do everything in her power to save her son from harm, and indeed from the clutches of his uncle? With the help of his patron, Jacques de Molay, she sends Josep to Cavallers - a school for knights - but sees it changing him, and not for the better.
In the absence of a father to guide him, Josep must hone his survival skills rapidly to shield himself from the intrigue, conflict and violence that surround him there. And what of the Templars and the Cathars, and their true role in this mystery? These are treacherous times for young Josep to navigate, and all the time war is coming between Catalonia and France.
