Martin Delany grew up in Charles Town, Virginia to a free mother and an enslaved father. Though he was free, Martin couldn't learn to read because it was against Virginia law. He and his family moved to Pennsylvania, which was a free state. There, Martin learned medicine and became one of the first Black doctors in the United States. During the Civil War, he went on to become the first Black major.
