Résumé

Marcus Teaches Us is written for children between 6 and 9 years of age.  In co-authoring this with a 9 year old boy from Trelawny, Jamaica, Doctor Eleanor combines activities and thoughtful knowledge-building exercises with stunning colorful illustrations which make understanding easy for these young readers. This children's eBook cultural biography is a joy to read. Everything comes together to bring to life the contributions of other Black influencers and People of Color up to the present.
Between 1923 and 1940, Garvey influenced leaders and potential leaders of developing countries, to become independent of colonial rule. Garvey's philosophy is built on racial liberation, self-empowerment and a Black homeland in Africa. His philosophy still speaks not only to African Americans, but to people of color as well as different cultures all over the world. The young co-author, Annu Yah Khadi Stewart has his own You Tube channel  "Star Seed Annu Talks".
On this channel he talks about how he sees Garvey's philosophy playing out in today's world. The duo of authors are both eloquent and knowledgeable making the book easy to read. It is soundly based on well-researched knowledge. Although designed for young readers, it is sure to attract a wide audience including parents, educators and librarians. Every child should own a copy of Marcus Teaches Us as they will learn that "You too can impact Black history".

À propos des auteurs

Dr. Eleanor Wint, social activist and retired Professor of Sociology & Social Work now lives in Canada and spends her time writing for young parents and children of all ages. Co-authoring with youngsters who have the gift of speaking what is on their minds, The "Tweet Tweet" series is a great example of this. In this series her 9 year old co-author uses her Awesome Pink Penguin, Tweet Tweet, to show others their age, how to manage emotions.  Her knowledge of parenting comes from living in and studying cultures all over the world.
Her teaching comes from years of working with families in all walks of life. It is not surprising that she has published a number of books which  focus on developing a positive sense of self, both in children and parents/caregivers. The Marcus Garvey series expands on this empowering children of color with the good news about Marcus Garvey the great black  philosopher. For her, it's all about enriching lives through writing.
