I was sitting at a huge table on the turf of a field of a wide-open stadium in Sin City, otherwise known as Las Vegas. The entire field, which was typically used for football, was covered with big tables just like the one I was sitting at, a huge stage setup at the end of the field.
Next to me, was my beautiful wife, Ashlynn, who was dressed to kill in a slinky black dress covered in sequins. It was low cut and had a teasingly long slit up the side that revealed just about every inch of her long leg when she took a step. Her blonde hair was down, wavy and perfect, and she looked hotter than any movie star I could think of. She was getting plenty of attention. She always did wherever we went.
She was every man's All-American dream girl. On my other side was the total opposite of my wife. Jerrick Wayne, a six-foot-four two hundred-twenty pound slab of solid muscle, a beastly linebacker from a university down south, fresh off the MVP award from the college football national championship. You might wonder why these two are on either side of me, it's because I'm Jerrick's agent and tonight is the draft.
The big event where the professional football teams pick the best college athletes that they want to play for them next year. I'm hoping Jerrick gets picked first overall, that will mean a big contract for him, and a big commission for me, not to mention all the other athletes who will want to hire me. That's why I was so freaking nervous. I sipped my cocktail, it tasted too sour and my hand shook so badly I nearly spilled it."Relax, honey, " My wife said, leaning over and squeezing my arm, the sweet scent of her perfume lingering toward me.
"They're about to start."She pointed to the stage and I saw the commissioner of the pro football league walk on stage, a chunky man in an ill-fitting blue suit with receding brown hair and round glasses. The crowd of spectators in the stands all around us booed, unhappy with just about everything the man did or said regarding rules and regulations of the game they loved to watch."Here we go, " Jerrick said, his voice a deep rumble.
He sat there with cool confidence, waiting patiently, a slight smile on his lips. I don't know how he did it, I was a nervous wreck. I grabbed my drink and drained it, ignoring the sour taste. The commissioner cleared his throat into the microphone and began, "And with the first overall pick of the twenty-twenty-three pro football draft, the Las Vegas Ranchers select, Jerrick Wayne."I jumped up, bumping the table and spilling some drinks, my arms in the air, shouting with glee.
My wife clapped and cheered. She knew what this meant. Jerrick slowly rose to his full height, towering over me. He put his hand on my shoulder as he walked by, heading toward the stage, shaking hands as he made it to the microphone. I sat back down, shaking with joy and excitement, a euphoric feeling washing over me."We've made it, baby!" I said to my beautiful wife."This is so great!" Ashlynn said, leaning against me and squeezing my arm."It sure is, " I said.
Jerrick put on a Las Vegas Ranchers hat and held up the crimson and gold jersey with his last name printed on the back, along with a big number 1. I held my hands up in the air in celebration one last time. I couldn't believe it. Ashlynn and I were going to be rich.
