Résumé

When she smiled at him as she walked past on that wet Berlin street, Jon Quennell fell instantly, madly in love. Sometimes, however, being 'crazy in love' with someone doesn't end in a beautiful romance. Sometimes people get hurt. And sometimes, people die. This is a short story (about 10, 000 words / 45 minutes read) that was initially inspired when a truly attractive woman smiled at me (a little seductively, I like to think), as she walked past me on a Berlin street.
I personally didn't react at that moment, other than to offer a vague smile back - I am happily married after all -  but it got me thinking about some potentially-interesting plot scenarios. A three-hour flight back home to Malaga proved to be an opportunity to hack out a premise and a first draft. I'm not one for romantic stories and happy endings, and hence the result was always likely to involve going somewhere quite dark. And it did.

À propos de l'auteur

Biographie de Damian Vargas

Damían Vargas is a middle-aged Brit of Mediterranean descent, who has been living in southern Spain for several years. Having worked for two decades in the digital entertainment sector, he is now working hard to establish himself as an author of dark psychological and crime thrillers. A particular trademark is the strong vein of sardonic humour that runs through his tales. He regards himself as a natural 'story-constructor' for whom 'writer's block' is an alien concept.
He has, since a young age, often entertained himself by constructing stories in his head. He does it on planes and trains, in cars, on beaches, in dull business meetings and, frequently, just to get to sleep. Making up a fictional story or scene has always come very naturally to him. Very often he features in these so, in a sense, they are often more 'personal fantasy' than fiction. He confesses to possessing more than a passing similarity to Walter Mitty in that respect.
Damían has an inexplicable fascination with the number '27' and an intense phobia of spiders.
