Paintings made in the 19th century are an extremely diverse group, and have frequently been found to present particular challenges to the conservator. These papers (which were presented at the British Association of Paintings Conservator-Restorers' conference A Changing Art ; Nineteenth-Century Painting Practice and Conservation) explore the reasons for the complexity and the changes that took place in the materiality of painting in the period.
Both nineteenth-century conservation concerns and present-day conservation treatments of nineteenth-century paintings are examined ; technical examination, documentary sources and accurate reconstructions all contribute here to a greater understanding of the practices and materials employed by nineteenth-century painters.
