Divergent, c'est l'histoire de Béatrice, une jeune fille de seize ans, qui évolue dans un Chicago futuriste où la société est divisée en cinq factions : les Altruistes, entièrement dévoués aux autres, les Audacieux, sans peur et courageux, les Érudits, qui détiennent la connaissance, les Sincères, qui ne mentent jamais et disent toujours ce qu'ils pensent, et les Fraternels, ceux qui croient en l'amitié. Une société où les "sans-faction" constituent au bas mot le rebut de l'humanité. Tris a seize ans, et il est temps pour elle de choisir la faction où elle passera le reste de
sa vie.
Pour l'y aider, on lui fait passer des tests d'aptitudes sensés faire ressortir le trait de caractère qui, chez elle, l'emporte sur tous les autres. Oui mais voilà, dans son cas, les tests ne sont pas concluants, Tris est une Divergente. Je n'en dirai pas plus pour ne surtout pas gâcher la lecture de ceux qui me liraient éventuellement, sachez simplement que vous saurez ce qu'est un Divergent et en quoi sa vie est en danger en lisant le livre ! Malgré son jeune âge, Veronica Roth nous propose ici un univers parfaitement maîtrisé et équilibré.
Grâce à ses personnages tout d'abord qui sont, à la base, tout sauf des héros. Tris est née chez les Altruistes, mais elle échoue lamentablement dans cette voie qui voudrait qu'elle se consacre entièrement aux autres. Elle est courageuse, certes, mais au prix de combien d'efforts ? Quatre a des abords froids et distants, mais on décèle d'emblée chez lui une fêlure qui en fait quelqu'un d'intriguant puis d'attachant. Will, Christina, Al... tous sont dotés d'une complexité qui les rend ô combien réels, tous sont parfaitement travaillés et aboutis.
La plume de Veronica Roth est terriblement sombre, les épreuves réservées aux novices Audacieux étant impitoyables. Mais elle est aussi simple et fluide, elle nous entraîne dans un maelström d'évènements qui aboutiront au passage à l'âge adulte de ces ados. Ils évoluent sous nos yeux, du début à la fin du roman, mais chaque étape sonne tellement juste qu'on y croit d'un bout à l'autre. Les révélations s'enchaînent, la tension monte graduellement, on sent bien qu'on va vers quelque chose d'effrayant mais il est nous est impossible de lâcher ce livre avant de savoir !
Ça faisait bien longtemps que je n'avais lu autant d'une traite, que je ne m'étais pas laissée emporter à ce point. Divergent m'a fait l'effet d'une petite bombe à lui tout seul, une bombe à l'univers novateur, aux personnages hauts en couleurs, et à l'intrigue addictive. Vivement le tome 2, Insurgent, qu'on nous promet à l'été 2012 ! Et en attendant, précipitez-vous, dès le 6 octobre, sur ce phénomène littéraire !
