This book explores a set of interventions and stances that inject a sense of moral and ethical purpose to learning in universities - a Socially Just Pedagogy. The call for a major transformation in higher education and beyond is argued to be reflective of a deep dissatisfaction with the lacklustre role universities are playing in encouraging social change ; indeed, movements like the #RhodesMustFall and #BlackLivesMatter campaigns emphasise the need to take into account contextual understandings, rather than simply reflecting ideas espoused from elsewhere and reinforcing ways of thinking and understanding that do not empower those disadvantaged.
Socially Just Pedagogy actively integrates cultural pluralism in developing knowledge and understanding that aspires to liberate the learner from existing power structures, by fostering a desire to challenge and change the social system in which we live.
