Von 1947 bis 1952 studierte er Evangelische Theologie und Klassische Archäologie in Halle und Greifswald ; 1953 Promotion, 1962 Habilitation. 1962 Dozent, 1965 Professor für Altes Testament an der Universität Greifswald, 1967 Professor für Altes Testament an der Universität Rostock. Seit 1992 ist er im Ruhestand. Matthias Augustin wurde 1950 in Meißen geboren. Von 1969 bis 1975 studierte er Evangelische Theologie, Philosophie und Rhetorik in Wuppertal und Heidelberg ; 1980 Promotion zum Dr.
theol., 1985 Promotion zum Dr. phil., 1989 Habilitation. Seit 1992 ist er Privatdozent für Altes Testament an der Universität Rostock.
