Résumé

This book is a Weekend Pocketbook on Everything You Should Know About AI Search, the technology transforming search engines from lists of links into machines that read, summarize, and answer for you. Written in everyday language, we explore how artificial intelligence (AI) search works, why it feels so different from traditional search, and what risks come with letting a machine mediate what we know.
What really happens after you type a question and press Enter? We begin with the old search engine model of crawlers scanning the web, indexes organizing pages, and ranking systems deciding which links deserve your attention. Then we move into the new world of retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), where the system not only finds pages but also gathers evidence, reads passages, and asks a large language model (LLM) to write an answer.
We follow a query through the hidden conveyor belt behind AI search. We explore how the system cleans up messy human language, rewrites vague questions, guesses intent, and then sends two search engines racing at once: one that matches exact words, and another that maps meaning using vectors. From there, the system filters spam, reranks sources, selects useful chunks, builds an "answer packet, " and hands it to the AI writer.
We also discuss why citations matter. A smooth answer is dangerous if you cannot see where it came from, so AI search engines attach sources, run safety checks, and use feedback loops to improve over time. We examine hallucinations, bad sources, prompt injection, bias, latency, cost, and the uncomfortable truth that a confident answer is not always a correct one. Finally, we look at the companies and the future.
Perplexity, Google, and Bing are building different versions of this machine, and the next stage may involve search agents that perform tasks rather than merely answering questions.
