The movie Shakespeare in Love, written by Mark Norman and Tom Stoppard, is a romantic comedy set in 1593. The protagonist is the young Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes), who is wrestling with writer's block as he works on a new play. Only when he meets a beautiful, aspiring actress (Gwyneth Paltrow), and falls in love, is Shakespeare's creativity unleashed once more - and he is inspired to write Romeo and Juliet ...
The movie also stars Geoffrey Rush, Colin Firth, Ben Affleck and Dame Judi Dench.
Shakespeare in Love: The Book gathers some of the Bard's
most luminous love poetry - including a selection of the
best-known Sonnets ('Shall 1 compare thee to a summer's
day?', 'My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun'), and songs, and soliloquies from the plays (Romeo's 'What light through yonder window breaks?', plus extracts from Twelfth Night, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Measure for Measure and others). These are accompanied by beautiful sepia-tinted pictures from the movie, making Shakespeare in Love a cherishable memento of word and image.
