Résumé

Ranging across the breadth of the Australian continent and a century of its history, David Malouf gives us some his finest writing to date. A small boy grows close to his mother's GI boyfriend while still waiting for his "missing in action" father to return ; a man is the victim of a nightmare encounter on a dark street ; a prostitute, a "comfort girl" for American troops, looks for some comfort of her own. Tender, warm and often shocking, this is a truly unforgettable collection.
