Biographie de Stephen-Frank Henning
STEPHEN FRANK HENNING was born in Portsmouth, England in 1948. His parents emigrated to South Africa in 1950.
He developed an early interest in natural history, first as an enthusiastic bird-watcher. He then developed a keen and lasting fascination for entomology and began collecting butterflies and other insects in 1960. He now has one of the largest private collections in Africa.
He matriculated in 1966 and, upon leaving school, worked as a medical technologist, obtaining the National Diploma in Medical Technology (Clinical Pathology) in 1971. He continued his studies at the University of the Witwatersrand from 1972 to 1979 and obtained his BSc (Hons) and MSc degrees in Zoology. He currently working for a Doctorate of Science through the University of Potchefstroom where to submit his thesis in 1989. From 1979 to 1984 he worked as a research officer in the Department of Medical Entomology at the South African Institute for Medical Research, and since 1985 has been teaching and has obtained the Higher Education Diploma (HED) from the University of South Africa. He is married and has three daughters.
Stephen Henning has published and has in press some forty scientific papers, mainly on butterflies and mosquitoes. In 1984 his book Southern African Butterflies was published by Macmillan South Africa. He has one other book in press - South African Red Data Book -
Butterflies, being for the South African National Scientific Council Programme, by
the Council for Scientific and Industrial
Research. He is currently working on a new book which is to be entitled The Butterflies of the Transvaal and Orange Free State. This is the first in a series of popular books which will eventually cover all the butterflies of Southern Africa.
