GERALD HOLTON is Mallinckrodt Professor of Physics and professor of history of Science, Harvard University. He is the author of numerous books, including Thematic Origins of Scientific Thought; Science and Anti-Science; The Advancement of Science, and Its Burdens; and The Scientific Imagination (all from Harvard).
