Biographie de Sara Paretsky
Sara Paretsky was born in Kansas, USA, in 1947. She studied finance and history at university, and she now lives in Chicago, where her husband recently retired from a physics teaching position at the University of Chicago. She is a full-time writer and is best known for her crime thrillers about V. I. Warshawski, a beautiful woman who works as a private detective. There are now a number of authors writing about female "private eyes", but she was one of the first and she remains one of the most popular.
One of her novels about V. I. won the Silver Dagger Award given by the Crime Writers' Association in 1988. V. I. Warshawski is unusual because she is a woman who undertakes dangerous investigations and often gets hurt. But she is still interested in clothes and good food. The books are set in Chicago and give a lively picture of the city and its people. V. I.'s father was from a Polish family and her mother was Italian, so readers learn something about the mixture of différent nationalities that makes up modern America.
Each book is set against the background of a particular type of business, and Sara Paretsky researches this carefully. For Deadlock she travelled on a ship through the Great Lakes. A film was made about V. I. Warshawski in 1991, starring Kathleen Turner as V.I.
