The name Celts was first written down by the ancient Greeks around 500 BC to describe peoples living across much of Europe north of the Alps. The word still resonates powerfully today because it has been continually redefined to echo contemporary concerns over politics and identity. Richly decorated objects made across Britain and Europe over the last 2 500 years tell the stories of the peoples who created and used them, and how Celtic art and identities have been reinvented over this time.
