The family contains about 450 genera and about 4000 species distributed throughout the world but concentrated particularly in the Old and New World tropics. The two subfamilies treated here are the Rauvolfioideae with about 915 species in 82 genera wordwide, and the Apocynoideae with about 822 species in 80 genera wordwide. In this region, these two subfamilies have 38 native genera (plus one more sometimes naturalised), and 119 native species (plus two more sometimes naturalised).
