Résumé

On April 7, 1803, Toussaint Louverture died in a freezing fortress in eastern France. Nine months later, the colony he had ruled declared itself Haiti-the first independent Black republic in the Atlantic world. Toussaint had been born enslaved. He became a free man, a Spanish officer, a general of the French Republic, and the dominant ruler of Saint-Domingue. He defended emancipation, expelled foreign armies, negotiated beyond Paris's permission, and built a constitution that made slavery's return impossible.
The same constitution made him governor for life. To preserve freedom, he kept the plantation economy alive and bound emancipated laborers to the fields. He Died Before Haiti Was Born follows the revolution through that contradiction. It refuses to turn Toussaint into either a flawless liberator or a convenient tyrant, and it refuses to erase the rebels, laborers, women, officers, and rivals whose choices carried the struggle beyond his death.
This is the story of a man who never declared Haitian independence-and of the revolution that outlived him, defeated Napoleon's army, and forced a new nation into the world.
