Achilles

Achilles knows before the ships sail. Not the details - not the name of the man who will grieve him most, not the specific afternoon when the arrow finds the one place his mother could not reach, not the quality of the dust or the weight of what he will carry. But the shape. Two roads, clearly visible, and the understanding that choosing one means losing everything the other would have given him. He chooses the short road.
He chooses it completely. Achilles follows that choice from its beginning to its end. From the night of his birth in Phthia, when the sea came inland further than it had any business coming, to the morning on the plain of Troy when the world finally catches up to what he has always known was coming. In between: a mother who spent his childhood trying to make him permanent and failed at one small place.
A centaur on a mountain who taught him everything he needed and nothing he wanted. A boy from Opus who walked through a gate one autumn morning with a small pack and a large weight and changed the structure of him permanently. A war that was never about what they said it was about. A rage that was also a grief. A grief that was also a love. A king who drove through the dark alone with gold and the knowledge that love was the only instrument he had left.
This is not a novel about glory. It is a novel about what glory costs. About the specific quality of a life lived completely - all the way in, nothing withheld, the choice made once and honored every day until the day it couldn't be honored anymore. About speed and grief and the people who looked at the weapon and found the man inside it and told him, in their different ways, that the man was worth finding.
