Résumé

Everyone knows how it ends. Oedipus killed his father at a crossroads without knowing who his father was. He married his mother without knowing who his mother was. He ruled Thebes for seventeen years with genuine excellence - a good king, a good husband, a man of unusual intelligence and complete sincerity - and then the plague came and he swore to find the killer of the old king, and he found him, and the killer was himself.
But Oedipus is not the story of the ending. It is the story of the three people who stood at three different distances from the same truth, and what each distance cost. Oedipus speaks in two voices - before the knowledge and after it - and discovers that catastrophe does not make you someone else. The same mind that solved the Sphinx solved the riddle of his own life. The same quality that made him a great king made it impossible for him to stop.
Jocasta speaks from the room before her ending. She knew. Not everything, not with certainty - but enough, and earlier than anyone has said. She chose silence not from cowardice but from the last available act of mercy, and she has examined that choice in every direction and will not apologize for it. The love was real. She needs that said. Tiresias speaks from his hillside, blind, ancient, the man who told the truth and was called a liar.
He has been right about everything for his entire long life. He would trade all of it for a single morning of not knowing what the day would bring. One truth. Three distances from it. And the question the novel asks and does not answer simply: is it better to know?
