The wars being fought across the Middle East, the tensions in the Taiwan Strait, the conflict in Ukraine, the erosion of democratic institutions across the world's largest democracies - these are not separate crises. They are expressions of a single structural feature of the current human situation, for which our analytical frameworks have not yet found adequate language. The certainty instinct - the human capacity for absolute, unfalsifiable, behaviourally governing conviction about ultimate things - is not a pathology.
It is a design feature, shaped by evolution for small-group survival in the Pleistocene, that built the cathedrals, drove abolition, and powered every movement in human history that required people to bear costs that calculated self-interest would not support. It also built the gas chambers, the gulags, the settlements on occupied lands, and the constitutional architecture of states that derive their supreme leader's authority directly from God.
The Certainty Instinct traces this capacity from its evolutionary origins through religion as its primary delivery mechanism, through the secular iterations that killed more people in fifty years than religious war managed in two centuries, through the specific ways that technology is now dismantling the corrective mechanisms that partially managed the instinct in previous eras. It examines the global constellation of active certainty systems currently in mutual confirmation-across Washington, Jerusalem, Tehran, Beijing, Moscow, New Delhi, Islamabad, and beyond-with the analytical rigour that the scale of the problem demands.
Every serious institutional attempt to constrain certainty-driven power has failed.
