Crime boss of New York Vito Genovese called for a meeting of mobsters from across the U. S. and overseas, which included everywhere from Boston to Havana, Kansas City to Los Angeles. The gathering-known as the Apalachin Summit, occurred on Nov. 14, 1957. The New York families sent high-level delegations totaling 19 men or about a quarter of the attendees. Buffalo crime family caporegime Joseph Barbara Sr.
worked under Buffalo crime family boss Stefano Magaddino and was the man that The Commission chose to host this summit-conference of the mafia at his at his 58 acre estate in Apalachin a census-designated place within the Town of Owego in Tioga County, New York. Barbara built the English manor style stone ranch house at his estate on a hill that was located at the address 625 McFall Rd. The sabotage of the Apalachin meeting led to the eventual fall of Vito Genovese as a powerful crime boss.
