Résumé

She is still in the house. This is where Electra begins and where she has always been - Mycenae, the house where her father was killed, the house where the man who helped kill him sleeps in her father's bed and sits in her father's chair and moves through her father's rooms with the specific ease of someone who has been in possession of them long enough that the previous owner has become abstract.
She was seventeen when her father came home from Troy. She was in the house for the three hours between his return and his death. She has been in the house ever since, holding the true version of what happened in a household committed to the official version, watching Aegisthus walk through the rooms without looking away, maintaining a grief that the world around her has moved on from because the grief is the honest response and she has always been the one who insists on the honest response.
Her sister Chrysothemis accommodated. Her mother built the official story and lived inside it. Electra held the line. She sent Orestes away when he was nine years old to protect him from Aegisthus, and then she waited for him to come back, and the waiting became the structure of her life - ten years of counting days, of maintaining a faith against the evidence of years when no word came, of watching the man who helped kill her father laugh in the rooms of her father's house.
ELECTRA: WHAT SHE KEPT is a literary novel about endurance as resistance, about the specific cost of refusing to accommodate the version of events that makes the unbearable bearable, about what ten years inside a house where something terrible happened does to the person who stays and watches and will not look away. She kept the grief because the grief was honest. She is still keeping it. The house is still the house.
