Résumé
This novel follows the life of Karman, a young Chinese-Indonesian man from the small town of Bawangsari whose life changes after the 30 September Movement in 1965. Because of his past connection with LEKRA, he is accused of being a member of the PKI, even though he was never involved in any rebellion. Forced to flee, he leaves behind his family and his old life, escaping deep into the forests of Kalimantan.
His journey brings him to Nagapura, a river town known for its floating market and boat traffic. There, he starts a new life as a simple noodle seller. The river becomes his place of survival and healing. Through this new life, he meets the Dayak people, especially Jata, a young Dayak man who leads him farther into the interior, into a world of forests, rivers, and spiritual mystery. Karman eventually arrives at Dusun Buaya and Desa Nanga Buaya.
Dusun Buaya is a traditional Dayak longhouse community where families live together under strong customary law. Desa Nanga Buaya lies in the middle of Lake Buaya, with a wooden floating church as the spiritual center of the Christian villagers. Here, nature and faith are inseparable: the river is the main road, the forest is both friend and guardian, and belief shapes daily life. Hidden in this region stands Candi Buaya, an ancient temple deep in the forest.
It is more than an old ruin-it is the spiritual heart of the community. Inside is the sacred Equinox Room, where sunlight falls directly onto a black granite altar during the equinox. This is seen as a divine sign, symbolizing harmony between heaven and earth, light and darkness, past and present. Though built from ancient Hindu heritage, the temple has become part of Christian life. A large cross stands in its courtyard, and Good Friday and Easter celebrations are often held there.
Christian faith, Dayak tradition, and ancient history meet in one sacred place. The temple is also believed to hide a secret connected to an old kingdom, the legend of Gajah Mada, and treasure buried beneath the altar. In Nanga Buaya, Karman is welcomed by Christine, a gentle and intelligent Dayak Christian girl who plays the sape. Through her kindness, he begins to feel the warmth of family again.
With the guidance of Pastor Heinrich, a German priest who has served there for many years, Karman slowly begins a deep spiritual journey. He learns about forgiveness, hope, and the meaning of suffering through Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter worship. Hymns like Amazing Grace and How Great Thou Art become part of his inner struggle. He battles guilt, fear, and longing for the family he left behind.
In the silence of the forest and the sound of the river at night, he discovers that salvation is not only escaping the past, but also accepting himself and trusting God's love. But peace does not last. A group from Jakarta arrives, claiming to be archaeologists who want to open the sacred altar for research. For the villagers, this is not science, but a threat to the center of their faith. Behind the excuse of history lies greed for the secret hidden beneath the altar.
What should have been a joyful Easter becomes a struggle between faith, history, and human desire. Karman must face the greatest question of his life: is God still present when sacred ground is touched by human greed?
