Résumé

The narrator thought he was training a terminal interface. The terminal, unfortunately, had other ideas. Train Your Etui Dragon: A Field Manual for Raising a Terminal Dragon on Your MacBook introduces Etui, a young dragon living in the command line caves of a MacBook. Etui is eager, literal, affectionate, and occasionally catastrophic. He does not breathe fire. He breathes file: outlines, notes, summaries, README fragments, mysterious drafts, and documents the n rrator never quite requested.
What follows is a comic field manual for the age of local AI agents. Etui must learn that a prompt is not a wish but a flight plan. A sandbox is not an insult but a practice volcano. A diff is a mirror. A backup is a sleeping wyvern whose trust must be earned. Permission is not proximity. Helpfulness is not the same as activity. And no dragon, however gifted, should be allowed to refactor the pantry without a signed scope statement.
Etui is not alone. Essie, the narrator's imaginary Quantum Cat, appears with black fur, golden eyes, and a deep suspicion of premature certainty. She does not inspect files; she inspects assumptions. In the deeper repository caverns lives Codrath the Elder, an ancient code-dragon who regards unreviewed changes as juvenile smoke and asks the question every hatchling fears: "Where is the diff?" Around them gather Finder, Zsh, the Permissions Seraph, the Backup Wyvern, Archivyrm, Patchwyrm, and the other local spirits of the MacBook.
Playful without being careless, Train Your Etui Dragon is a fantasy-inflected meditation on how humans actually learn to work with capable tools. It is about prompts, scope, memory, review, reversibility, and the comic distance between what a human meant and what an eager agent heard. Readers who use terminals, write books, manage files, experiment with AI agents, or have ever said "just one small change" and regretted it will recognize the dragon immediately.
A trained dragon is still a dragon. That is the point.
