Theologie der Zukunft. XVIII. Europäischer Kongress für Theologie (8.–11. September 2024 in Heidelberg)

Vom 8. bis 11. September 2024 fand in Heidelberg der XVIII. Europäische Kongress für Theologie zum Thema »Theologie der Zukunft« statt. Die Doppeldeutigkeit dieses Ausdrucks verweist auf zwei Brennpunkte des Themas, die miteinander in Verbindung gebracht werden sollen: Was hat die Theologie zur Zukunft zu sagen und wie kann die Theologie in der Zukunft aussehen? Die großen Themen von Klimawandel, Krieg und Pandemie bis hin zu gesellschaftlichen und religiösen Umbrüchen fordern auch die Theologie inhaltlich heraus - so unvorhersehbar die weiteren Entwicklungen auch sein mögen.
Sie zwingen die Theologie zu nachhaltigen und kritischen Reformulierungen ihrer Eschatologie, ihrer Rede »von den letzten Dingen« . Die Theologie kann sich dabei auf ein reiches Traditionsrepertoire von der Apokalyptik über den Millenarismus bis hin zu eschatologischen Ausprägungen der Ökotheologie beziehen und steht nun vor der Aufgabe, diese Traditionen zu prüfen, zu rekonzeptualisieren oder zu verwerfen.
Die hier versammelten Beiträge dokumentieren den Kongress mit seinen Haupt- und Sektionsvorträgen und sind zugleich ein erster Aufschlag für eine notwendige Diskussion innerhalb der Theologie. [Theology of the Future. 18th European Congress of Theology (September 8-11, 2024, in Heidelberg)] From September 8 to 11, 2024, the XVIIIth European Congress of Theology took place in Heidelberg on the topic of »Theology of the Future - the Future of Theology« The ambiguity of this expression refers to two focal points of the topic that are to be linked: What does theology have to say about the future, and what might theology look like in the future? The major issues ranging from climate change, war, and pandemics to social and religious upheavals also challenge theology-as unpredictable as further developments may be.
They force theology to undertake sustainable and critical reformulations of its eschatology, its discourse "on the last things." Theology can draw on a rich repertoire of traditions, from apocalypticism and millenarianism to eschatological forms of ecotheology, and now faces the task of examining, reconceptualizing, or rejecting these traditions. The contributions collected here document the congress with its main and section presentations and are at the same time a first step toward a necessary discussion within theology.
