Résumé
What do you do when the parent you thought was invincible needs you to let go?Six Latino friends in their sixties have spent their careers solving problems, as architects, therapists, engineers, teachers, executives, and doctors. None of them were ready for this one. When Ana watches her mother Carmen choose palliative care over aggressive cancer treatment and die with intention and clarity, it breaks something open in the group.
One by one, they learn that loving someone well can mean helping them die well, and that the Latino families they come from have rarely said this out loud. The Weight of Choosing follows the ensemble through alternating perspectives as each member faces a version of the same reckoning. Debbie, a Cuban-American therapist whose mother wanders into the streets with dementia. Mauricio, a Cuban-American engineer whose father refuses heart surgery and asks only to live fully for whatever time is left.
Maria, a Salvadoran-American executive who treats her father's Alzheimer's like a logistics problem. Nico, a teacher whose worry about his aging parents hardens into obsessive research. Isabella and Carlos, a devout Catholic couple who wrestle with whether Carmen's intentional dying was faithful or faithless. And Elena, a doctor whose own death becomes the group's final and most important lesson. Together they build Familias Preparadas, a community program that teaches Latino families to approach end-of-life planning as an act of love rather than defeat.
Grounded in the author's own conversations about aging and dying, the novel asks what it means to prepare for death with the same care we bring to every other part of life. For readers of Luis Alberto Urrea's The House of Broken Angels, Lisa Genova's Still Alice, Paul Kalanithi's When Breath Becomes Air, and Marilynne Robinson's Gilead.
