Résumé

People live without checking for themselves. They do not ask how things were handled or what standards were used. Questions are inconvenient. Results arrive quickly. Each time, the interpretation comes pre-packaged. and daily life moves on without resistance. In the process, people learn to speak without subjects. While translating, I moved between languages and habits of thought shaped by different countries.
I saw institutions maintain order through repetition rather than command. Western anti-discrimination regimes. The European Union's regulatory habits. The Chinese model of administrative control. I also saw how these methods settle into Korean society, piece by piece. This book looks at how power that cannot be checked enters everyday judgment. Decisions that begin in politics and institutions reappear inside the home.
They surface in a parent's words, then harden into workplace rules. In the end, the state assumes the role of interpreter for the individual. Reasons are supplied afterward. Objections are dismissed as conspiracy or hostility. Citizens grow accustomed to accepting outcomes without asking how they were produced. I stepped back from the values the world claims to uphold. Refusing to ignore discomfort became my responsibility.
I chose not to hand that burden to others. I begin from ordinary scenes. A kitchen door closing on its own. Letters spreading across a page. A box left unidentified in a recycling area. Passing through an unmanned payment gate takes only a moment. Still, something does not sit right. An election system that cannot be inspected. Power divided between courts and the executive. Debates over dissolving religions.
They differ in form, but they serve the same purpose-protecting their own authority. As I reached the end, the system fell back. What came forward was human instinct itself, including the habit of treating this condition as normal. If all I can do is record, I do not want to write cautiously. I wanted to verify things myself. How easily people settle on a cause. How quickly interpretation closes. And who gains from that speed. Requisition of Equality was an exercise in stopping before a question.
A posture that withholds approval. A way of living that refuses to smooth things over. That unease is the reason I write another sentence today.
