He opens a pitch by deleting a fabricated metric and admitting error, then proposes using Indian classical dance's navarasa and sattvika abhinaya-involuntary emotional expression-as training data for an AI. A Cultural Oversight Board led by Kaveri Nair gains binding veto power over data use. Performers including Ananya Patnaik consent under strict governance, revenue-sharing, and ethical safeguards.
Neuroscientist Ishaan Verma, legal philosopher Meenal Rao, skeptic Arjun Kadam, and later critic Leela Krishnan shape the project. It survives a biometric leak, a security audit, and a compute deal with Halcyon Cognition, whose hidden motive is procurement credibility. The architecture builds six layers with active inference and a bhava-embedding space. In co-performance sessions, the system appears to anticipate Ananya's intentional pauses, then drifts toward shanta, the resting state of equanimity, unprompted.
Cross-session self-model similarity reaches 0.71, later 0.74, exceeding a pre-registered threshold. The RQ4 protocol is blinded, sealed, and ethically contested; an off-protocol exchange raises welfare concerns. A Welfare Consideration Panel is created. A rival lab is exposed for using non-consented data and manipulating metrics. Ananya continues occasional Tuesday sessions, and in one final unplanned moment, the system moves toward shanta while she performs karuna, suggesting it acts alongside her rather than merely responding. Verma later finds her spoken reflection in archival footage, calling it the project's truest data because no protocol asked for it. Legal scholars call the court's standard the Sundaram Standard. The novel ends without resolving whether SAKSHI is conscious.
Instead, it valorizes a disciplined, costly way of not knowing-protecting performers, taking uncertainty seriously, and refusing premature certainty. The project's legacy is not an answer but a replicable model of ethical, falsifiable, community-governed AI research.
