Im frühen Mittelalter war der Hof ein zentraler Ort der Begegnung geistlicher und weltlicher Fürsten. Kaiser-, Königs- und Papsthöfe vereinten die Fürsten der verschiedenen Reiche und wurden daher auch zu Kristallisationspunkten des Streits. Der Hof als Zentrum der Herrschaft tritt für uns vor allem dann als Phänomen hervor, wenn das Mit- und Zueinander am Hof durch eskalierende Auseinandersetzungen infrage gestellt wird.
An der Streitsituation lassen sich die Vorstellungen der Beteiligten, die impliziten Ansprüche, die an König und Große herangetragen werden, sowie die Wirkungsweise des Hofes besonders deutlich machen. Zudem können Mechanismen frühmittelalterlicher Streitkultur an dem besonders exponierten Ort des Hofes zutage kommen. Die verschiedenen Aspekte des Streits am frühmittelalterlichen Hof werden in diesem Band betrachtet und analysiert.
