People disappear during overnight retail shifts all the time. They hide in the bathroom. They wander into forgotten corners of the store. They take suspiciously long breaks and somehow remain unavailable whenever there is actual work to do. So when Darren disappears, nobody is particularly concerned. At first. Ryan Blaney and the rest of the overnight crew assume Darren is avoiding work again. But as the minutes pass, they realize he is not hiding.
He is gone. Then another employee disappears. The security cameras offer no explanation. The exits remain locked. The enormous store suddenly feels much emptier, and the workers begin to understand that something is moving through the aisles with them. The overnight shift is not finished.
