Résumé

It's Zany, Explosive, Funny, Felony-adjacent. Fast-Paced, Chaotic, Hilarious, Suspenseful, Wild, Twisty, Outrageous. Glitter covered. It's Sinful on the 4th of July. A throwback to the early days of Miss Fortune, Red, White, and Boom takes place one year after the events of Soldier of Fortune-and Fortune Redding has one simple goal for Sinful's Fourth of July celebration: no explosions, no bodies, no felony-level chaos, and absolutely no reason for Carter to use that disappointed lawman stare.
Unfortunately, this is Sinful, Louisiana, where "simple" usually means Gertie has already packed snacks, Ida Belle has a plan she refuses to call illegal, and Celia Arceneaux has found a way to turn patriotism into a committee-supervised hostage situation. When suspicious fireworks, a historic strongbox, old family secrets, and a costume known only as Liberty Hell collide, Fortune finds herself trapped in a red-white-and-blue disaster with bells on-literally.
What follows is a fast, funny, high-energy romp packed with small-town scheming, bayou trouble, questionable transportation, public humiliation, and the kind of zany mayhem only Sinful can deliver. If you miss the wild, laugh-out-loud intensity of Fortune's earliest adventures, this Fourth of July caper is ready to light the fuse. This is part of the Throwback to Miss Fortune Series, but is meant to be read as a standalone. For more books from Stephen John, check out Burning Mistakes and Fame and Fortune.
About the AuthorSteve is a retired business executive and freelance sports journalist who now spends his days chasing fictional criminals and real guitar strings. He writes cozy mysteries with a Miss Fortune twist, inspired by the delightfully chaotic world of Jana DeLeon-where the suspects are slippery, the sidekicks are snarky, and the body count is strictly literary. Before turning to mystery and mayhem, Steve interviewed thirty of the world's top poker players for Phil Hellmuth's book Deal Me In.
He's also co-authored two Dane Maddock thrillers with David Wood (Devil's Face and Gray Ghost) and teamed up with Jesse Jacobson on Rainhorse, a novel that gallops between grit and grace. When he's not writing, Steve performs with his two-piece acoustic band, Latitude 47, in and around the Seattle area-including senior homes, where the crowd knows every lyric and occasionally requests a plot twist.
His guitar has been known to solve more story problems than his outline software, and his groupies (mostly retired librarians and one very enthusiastic bingo caller) are fiercely loyal. Steve has been married for 49 years-a record even his fictional detectives would envy-and enjoys time with his two children and two grandchildren, who keep him young and occasionally ask him to turn the amp down. He's currently working on his first Western novel, White Bone Prairie, where the horses are fast, the justice is frontier-style, and the moral compass spins like a poker chip in a hurricane.
