Résumé

She was sent to disappear. Sinful had other plans.     The year is 2013. The place is Sinful.     Fortune Redding was supposed to be lying low.     Instead, the CIA's most effective field operative is stuck in Sinful, Louisiana, pretending to be a mild-mannered librarian with a fake past, a borrowed name, and entirely too many opinions about humidity, alligators, and the agency's idea of a good hiding place.     Then a late-night jog puts her in front of a burning house where her instincts kick in and her orders fly out the window.     After pulling an innocent family out of the flames, Fortune finds herself knee-deep in yet another Sinful disaster-this one involving an innocent man accused of arson, an annoying observant deputy sheriff, and two retired grandmothers who approach criminal investigations with the energy, creativity, and tactical planning of a covert ops team with casserole recipes.     Evidence is scarce, and what they have points in all the wrong directions.
Fortune, Ida Belle, and Gertie set out to prove the family man accused of torching his own house is innocent. What they uncover instead is a botched murder plot, a man desperate enough to kill, and deeply inconvenient facts about the house that burned to the ground.     Along the way, there may also be an unfortunate church-social incident involving sequins, poor judgment, and a quantity of aggressive wildlife best left undescribed.     Now Fortune has to stop a killer, protect her cover, and survive the kind of small-town chaos that somehow keeps finding her no matter how hard she works to avoid it.
In Sinful, nothing is ever simple.    And when Fortune, fire, and vengeance collide, things are bound to get messy. For more books from Stephen John, check out RED, WHITE AND BOOM and FAME AND FORTUNE.
About the AuthorSteve is a retired business executive and freelance sports journalist who now spends his days chasing fictional criminals and real guitar strings. He writes cozy mysteries with a Miss Fortune twist, inspired by the delightfully chaotic world of Jana DeLeon-where the suspects are slippery, the sidekicks are snarky, and the body count is strictly literary. Before turning to mystery and mayhem, Steve interviewed thirty of the world's top poker players for Phil Hellmuth's book Deal Me In.
He's also co-authored two Dane Maddock thrillers with David Wood (Devil's Face and Gray Ghost) and teamed up with Jesse Jacobson on Rainhorse, a novel that gallops between grit and grace. When he's not writing, Steve performs with his two-piece acoustic band, Latitude 47, in and around the Seattle area-including senior homes, where the crowd knows every lyric and occasionally requests a plot twist.
His guitar has been known to solve more story problems than his outline software, and his groupies (mostly retired librarians and one very enthusiastic bingo caller) are fiercely loyal. Steve has been married for 49 years-a record even his fictional detectives would envy-and enjoys time with his two children and two grandchildren, who keep him young and occasionally ask him to turn the amp down. He's currently working on his first Western novel, White Bone Prairie, where the horses are fast, the justice is frontier-style, and the moral compass spins like a poker chip in a hurricane.
