Energy is the quiet foundation beneath every modern achievement. Each advance in computing, medicine, transportation, and communication rests, in the end, on how skillfully we generate, store, and release energy. What sets our century apart is that the goal is no longer simply to produce more of it. The task is to produce and deliver energy sustainably, efficiently, and at planetary scale - and increasingly, to do so on demand, wherever and whenever it is needed.
At the center of that transformation sits a single enabling technology: energy storage. Batteries have travelled a remarkable distance in a short time, from modest devices that powered flashlights and radios to the load-bearing infrastructure of a global energy transition. Today they move automobiles, steady electric grids stitched together from sunlight and wind, back up the data centers that run artificial intelligence, and keep critical medical and defense systems alive when nothing else can.
In a very real sense, the future of energy - and with it much of the future of society - will be shaped by how we design, manufacture, and deploy batteries. This book was written with a clear purpose: to offer a comprehensive, rigorous, and forward-looking account of battery technologies and the storage systems built around them. It deliberately bridges the distance between fundamental science and working hardware, weaving together electrochemistry, materials science, engineering, economics, policy, and the global supply chains that make - or break - a battery industry.
Unlike texts that treat either theory or application in isolation, this one is organized to mirror the true character of the field: multidisciplinary, fast-moving, and deeply interconnected. It opens with the electrochemical first principles that govern every cell, builds through materials and system design, and then extends into the frontier - artificial intelligence in battery management, solid-state and lithium-metal architectures, post-lithium chemistries, circular-economy manufacturing, and the geopolitics of critical minerals.
A defining feature of this edition is its attention to what is happening right now. The energy landscape is changing at a pace that would have seemed implausible a decade ago, and understanding the trajectory matters as much as mastering the settled canon. By August 2026 the numbers tell the story plainly. Global electric-car sales passed twenty million in 2025 - roughly one in four new cars sold worldwide - and average lithium-ion pack prices fell to a record 108 dollars per kilowatt-hour, some ninety-three percent below their 2010 level [A1, A13].
Sodium-ion cells crossed from the laboratory into mass production; the first pilot lines for solid-state lithium-metal cells were switched on; and battery recycling matured into a genuine domestic source of lithium, nickel, and cobalt. These are not distant possibilities. They are the working reality of the industry as verified through 12 August 2026, and they are treated here as such.
